You are looking for a hotel API to put hotels in your app: search by city, live prices, photos, reviews, maybe even the booking itself. The hard part is not the code. It is that most hotel booking APIs are not open to everyone.
This guide compares six real hotel API options, who can use each one today, what it costs, and which fits your project. Facts below are checked against each provider's own documentation as of October 2026.
What a hotel API (hotel booking API) actually does#
Most hotel APIs cover some or all of these steps:
- Content: hotel names, photos, facilities, locations and reviews.
- Search and availability: which hotels have rooms for your dates, and at what price.
- Booking: creating the reservation.
- After-sales: changes, cancellations and reports.
The more steps an API covers, the harder it is to get approved. That is why the table below looks the way it does.
Hotel APIs compared (October 2026)#
| Option | Who can get access | Free to try? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking.com Demand API | Approved Affiliate Partners | No self-serve signup | Established travel businesses |
| Expedia Group Rapid API | Approved partners after certification | No free tier | Large OTAs and platforms |
| Agoda Demand API | Partners, sandbox after contract | No self-serve signup | Affiliates and price-comparison sites |
| Hotelbeds APItude | Register for test keys; production by contract | Yes, 50 requests a day in test | B2B travel agencies and tour operators |
| Amadeus Self-Service | Closed on 17 July 2026 | Not available | Move to Amadeus Enterprise |
| Hosted data API (RapidAPI) | Anyone | Yes, free plans | Side projects, MVPs, price trackers |
1. Booking.com Demand API#
Booking.com's official Demand API gives access to its accommodation inventory: searching, details, availability and managing bookings. Access is for Affiliate Partners, so you apply and get approved rather than just signing up. Authentication uses your affiliate ID and token, and requests are HTTPS with JSON responses.
Best for: a travel site with real traffic that wants the most reliable, official source.

2. Expedia Group Rapid API#
Expedia's Rapid API covers lodging content, rates and booking across Expedia Group brands. It is a commercial partner product: you apply, build, pass certification and agree terms before you launch. There is no free tier.
Best for: large platforms that can invest in an integration and need booking, not just search.
3. Agoda Demand API#
Agoda offers different partnership models. If you run an affiliate or price-comparison site, you only need the Search API. If you want to take bookings yourself, you also implement the Book API. After you sign the contract, Agoda issues sandbox credentials that mirror production but only return test inventory.
Best for: affiliate and comparison sites, especially for Asia-Pacific demand.
4. Hotelbeds APItude#
Hotelbeds is a B2B hotel supplier. You can register for test keys in a few clicks and call the test endpoint, but the evaluation quota is limited to 50 requests a day, and test bookings do not create real reservations. Production use is for travel businesses and goes through a commercial agreement. Requests are signed with an X-Signature header.
Best for: travel agencies, tour operators and tech teams building B2B booking tools.
5. Amadeus Self-Service#
Amadeus used to be the go-to answer for developers because of its free monthly quota. The company closed its Self-Service developer portal on 17 July 2026, and only Enterprise access through a sales contract remains. Many older tutorials still recommend it, so be careful when you read them.
Best for: nobody starting fresh. If you already use it, plan your migration.
6. Hosted hotel data APIs on RapidAPI#
Marketplaces list third-party APIs that return hotel search, prices and reviews as JSON, with a free plan and instant keys. They are the fastest way to get real data into a prototype. Two things to know: they are not official partner APIs, so there is no SLA, and you normally search and compare, then send the traveller to the hotel site to book.
Best for: side projects, MVPs, hotel price trackers and content sites. See the full walkthrough with code in our Booking.com API key tutorial.
A first call with a hosted hotel API#
Here is the pattern most hosted hotel APIs follow. You resolve a place to an ID, then search with dates:
curl --request GET \
--url 'https://booking-com15.p.rapidapi.com/api/v1/hotels/searchDestination?query=Lisbon' \
--header 'X-RapidAPI-Host: booking-com15.p.rapidapi.com' \
--header 'X-RapidAPI-Key: YOUR_RAPIDAPI_KEY'Use the returned dest_id in a second call to searchHotels with your check-in and check-out dates, adults and currency. The Booking.com API tutorial shows both calls in Node.js and Python.
How to choose#
Ask these four questions in order:
- Do you need to take bookings, or just show hotels and prices? Search only: any option works. Bookings: you need an official partner API.
- Is this a business with a legal entity and traffic? Yes: apply to Booking.com, Expedia or Agoda. No: start with a hosted API.
- Are you a B2B reseller or agency? Look at Hotelbeds.
- Is this a prototype? Start free, validate demand, then apply for official access once you have users.
Mistakes to avoid#
- Following old Amadeus tutorials. The self-service portal is gone.
- Scraping hotel sites yourself. It breaks often and can violate the site's terms. Use an API.
- Ignoring terms. Read the provider's terms before building a commercial product, especially for hosted data APIs.
- Not caching. Destination IDs and hotel content rarely change. Cache them to save requests.
- Hardcoding prices. Prices and availability change by the minute. Always fetch live.
